Finding Your First Clients

Where first clients actually come from — your network and a few specific, low-cost channels.

Module goal

Build a realistic list of people and businesses to approach, with specific pitches instead of vague ones.

Lesson 1Start where trust already exists

Your first few clients rarely come from a polished website or expensive advertising — they come from your existing network and a handful of specific, low-cost channels, used consistently.

  • Start with people who already trust you. Family, friends, former classmates and their networks are far more likely to hire or refer you. Tell people specifically what you do — “I design logos and flyers for small businesses” gets referred; “I do design stuff now” doesn't.
  • WhatsApp and Facebook groups matter more than most new freelancers expect. Local business and community groups are where a lot of small-business hiring actually happens in Ghana — being genuinely useful there builds visibility faster than repeated “hire me” posts.
  • Direct outreach works, if it's specific. “Do you need any services?” gets ignored. “I noticed your shop doesn't have a logo yet — I design logos for small businesses starting at GHS X, would you be interested?” gets replies.

Real-life example

After finishing the Graphic Design track, Ama messaged 10 small businesses she actually used and liked — her hairdresser, a nearby food vendor, a friend's boutique — each with a specific, low-pressure offer based on what she'd noticed about their branding. Three replied within a week, and one became her first paying client.

02

Practical task

  1. 1.List 10 real people or small businesses you could realistically reach out to this week.
  2. 2.For 3 of them, write a specific, tailored one-line pitch — not a generic “I offer services” message.
  3. 3.Send at least one of those messages before the week ends.
