Hard Reset & Boot Mode Reference

Android & iOS

Key combinations for recovery, download and force restart

What it does. A reference of hardware key combinations that place a phone into recovery mode, download/Odin mode, fastboot, or trigger a forced restart with no software installed.

Why it matters. Every repair session begins with getting the device into the right mode. No cable, tool or licence helps if the phone never leaves the normal boot path.

Risks & precautions

  • A factory reset from recovery erases user data permanently.
  • On some Samsung models a wipe prompt is one keypress away from data loss.

Best practices

  • Confirm the exact model before choosing a key combination.
  • Attempt a backup before any reset while the device still boots.
  • Write the combination into the repair log so the next technician does not guess.

Assignment

AI Diagnostic Assistant Workflow

Workstation

Using AI models to triage error codes and firmware choices

What it does. A structured way to feed error strings, log excerpts and device identifiers into an AI assistant to shortlist likely causes and matching firmware before you touch the bench.

Why it matters. AI compresses the search phase of a repair. It does not replace judgement, but it turns a 40-minute forum hunt into a two-minute shortlist you then verify.

Risks & precautions

  • AI can invent firmware versions and file names that do not exist.
  • Pasting customer identifiers into public tools leaks private data.

Best practices

  • Verify every AI suggestion against the manufacturer or a known-good firmware source.
  • Redact IMEI, serial numbers and customer details before pasting logs.
  • Ask for the reasoning, not just the answer, so you learn the diagnostic path.

Assignment

Samsung Flashing Utility

Windows - Samsung

Odin-class firmware writer for Galaxy devices

What it does. Writes signed Samsung firmware packages (BL, AP, CP, CSC) to a Galaxy device sitting in Download mode over USB.

Why it matters. Most Samsung software faults - boot loops, failed updates, corrupt system partitions - are resolved by writing a matching firmware set. This is the workhorse of an Android bench.

Risks & precautions

  • Firmware for the wrong model or region can hard-brick the device.
  • HOME_CSC preserves data, CSC wipes it - choosing wrong destroys customer photos.
  • Disconnecting mid-write leaves the device unbootable.

Best practices

  • Match the model code and CSC exactly to the label or Settings entry.
  • Use a rear USB 2.0 port and the original cable.
  • Never downgrade below the bootloader binary version in the model string.

iAndroFix DFU Helper

Windows/macOS - iOS

Guided DFU and recovery-mode entry for iPhone/iPad

What it does. Times and guides the button sequence that places an iPhone into DFU mode, and confirms the workstation sees the device before a restore starts.

Why it matters. DFU timing is unforgiving. A helper removes the guesswork so a failed restore points at the device, not at your thumbs.

Risks & precautions

  • A DFU restore erases the device completely.
  • Activation Lock survives the restore - confirm ownership before wiping.

Best practices

  • Check the Apple Account / Activation Lock status before any restore.
  • Use a certified cable; DFU is intolerant of flaky cables.
  • A black screen means DFU; a logo means recovery mode.

Intermediate - Exploit and bypass utilities

Now you work below the operating system: exploit loaders and account-bypass utilities used for Hello-screen and iCloud/FRP scenarios on eligible devices.

What it does. Loads an unpatchable bootROM exploit over USB on eligible chipsets to allow low-level operations such as passcode work, Hello-screen bypass and diagnostics that iTunes cannot perform.

Why it matters. It gives you a legitimate low-level entry point on supported models, which is often the only route to service a locked but customer-owned device.

Risks & precautions

  • Use only on devices whose ownership you have verified.
  • Not all sessions survive reboot - work while the exploit is loaded.
  • Newer chipsets are patched and will fail; forcing it wastes time.

Best practices

  • Confirm chipset eligibility before quoting the customer.
  • Log ECID and serial for every session.
  • Keep the workstation off sleep during the exploit window.

Assignment

Load the exploit on a supported test device, record ECID, and exit cleanly without changes.

GB Bypass Tool

Windows - iOS / Android

Hello-screen and Google-account bypass on owner-verified devices

What it does. Automates the sequence of exploit load, ramdisk boot and account-state edit used to bypass Setup-Assistant lock screens on devices you have verified as customer-owned.

Why it matters. Locked screens after a legitimate reset are one of the most common bench requests. A single tool with a clear log removes guesswork.

Risks & precautions

  • Never operate on devices without documented ownership - this is a legal red line.
  • Some bypass states do not survive erase or update.
  • Cellular functions may be limited on certain bypass modes.

Best practices

  • File a signed ownership declaration before starting.
  • Explain to the customer which functions may be limited afterwards.
  • Update the tool only from the vendor's channel.

Vendor and third-party service tools that talk to the modem, EFS and secure partitions - powerful, and unforgiving of mistakes.

Nokia/HMD-class service utility for factory reset and flashing

What it does. A service-grade utility used for factory reset, firmware flashing, product-code changes and low-level operations on supported devices.

Why it matters. Service tools reach layers the consumer OS hides, which is what most bricks and lock states need touched.

Risks & precautions

  • A wrong product code or region flash can leave the device unable to connect to networks.
  • USB disconnects mid-operation can corrupt the boot region.

Best practices

  • Save the original product code before changing it.
  • Use only firmware matching the physical model label.
  • Keep the phone on the bench charger during any long operation.

What it does. Covers Qualcomm, MediaTek and other chipsets for flashing, FRP removal on owner-verified devices, IMEI diagnostics and partition backups.

Why it matters. A single UI for jobs that would otherwise need three or four separate tools shortens turnaround on a busy bench.

Risks & precautions

  • Wide capability means wide blast radius - always double-check the model and operation.
  • Some operations require credits; a failed attempt still consumes them.

Best practices

  • Read the operation's warning dialog fully before confirming.
  • Back up EFS / NV before any modem work.
  • Keep the dongle/licence firmware updated.

Expert - Activation and remote services

What it does. Handles activation-state operations on eligible, owner-verified iOS devices, including signal-preserving flows on supported chipsets.

Why it matters. Some post-restore states cannot be resolved without an activation-grade tool. Knowing when to reach for it - and when not to - separates a professional from a hobbyist.

Risks & precautions

  • Illegal use (stolen devices) exposes the shop and the technician to prosecution.
  • State can regress after major iOS updates.

Best practices

  • Require photo ID and proof of purchase before starting.
  • Explain any post-service limitations in writing.

Remote (TeamViewer/AnyDesk) - Android

Vendor-run Factory Reset Protection removal for Android

What it does. A remote-operated service where a certified technician connects to your workstation and clears Google FRP on an owner-verified device.

Why it matters. For newer Android devices, remote services are often the only supported path - and the audit trail they produce protects your business.

Risks & precautions

  • Never leave the remote session unattended.
  • Do not share OS credentials beyond the session's needs.
  • Some services store a job log - treat it as customer data.

Best practices

  • Use a dedicated bench account with limited privileges for remote sessions.
  • Record start/end time, technician ID and result in every job ticket.
  • Disable remote access immediately after the job.
