Lesson 1Three buckets for every task
Not every task is a good fit for AI, and not every task should be kept entirely to yourself either. The first habit is learning to quickly sort a task into one of three buckets.
- Full handoff — low-stakes, well-understood tasks where a wrong or awkward result costs almost nothing to fix: a first draft of a social caption, business name ideas, reformatting a messy list into a table.
- Collaboration — medium-stakes tasks where AI can do real heavy lifting but you stay closely involved: a business proposal, a marketing plan, debugging a coding problem.
- Keep it yours — high-stakes tasks involving judgment, relationships, legal or financial consequences, or deep local context AI can't reliably access: handling a serious complaint, negotiating a contract, a final hiring decision.
Real-life example: Abena runs a small tailoring business. Drafting an Instagram caption for a new fabric arrival? Full handoff — low stakes, easy to fix if it's off. Writing a marketing plan for a second location? Collaboration — AI structures ideas and researches competitors, but she makes the strategic calls. Deciding whether to let an underperforming employee go? Entirely hers — that needs judgment, empathy and local labour knowledge no AI tool has.
The habit
Before typing anything, pause and ask which bucket this task actually belongs in. Getting it wrong in either direction causes problems.
